Events sponsored by the Institute will begin Wednesday, June 5, 2013, in Washington, D.C., and culminate with a community celebration, and tribute gala in Jackson, Mississippi, on Wednesday, June 12.  Joining Mrs. Evers in the announcement were representatives of community organizations helping to sponsor the activities and hosting their own events.

Reena Evers-Everette, daughter of Medgar and Myrlie Evers and executive director of the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Institute, announced that a memorial service will be held at her father’s gravesite in Arlington National Cemetery on June 5 at 12:00 noon.

She added that on the evening on June 5 a symposium entitled “The Legacy of Medgar Evers’ will be held at the Newseum in the nation’s capital.  Myrlie Evers, noted civil rights activist Julia Bond, and award-winning investigative reporter Jerry Mitchell will participate in a discussion moderated by national public broadcasting’s Gwen Ifill, host of Washington Week and senior correspondent on PBS NewsHour.

Other Evers Institute- sponsored events will include guided and self-guided civil rights tours and a showcase of civil right films on Monday and Tuesday, June 10 and 11 in Jackson.

“Where Medgar Walked” tours will offer an opportunity to walk in Evers’ footsteps, according to coordinator Daphne Chamberlain, Ph.D., director of the COFO Civil Rights Education Center.  “Remnants of a civil rights past conjure memories of the freedom struggle in the capital city,” Chamberlain said.

“These historic landmarks are stark reminders of a young man called to serve- a young man who paid the ultimate price with his life.  From his first office nestled in the heart of what was once a hub for black life in Jackson to the house Evers made a home for his family, visitors will be able to walk where Medgar walked as he fought to change the Mississippi he loved, ” Chamberlain said.

Jeanne Luckett, Medgar Evers 50th Event Director, announced a continuous free showing of films related to Evers and the civil rights movement in Mississippi.  The film festival will be showcased at the Davis Planetarium.  Feature films, documentaries, and oral history interviews will be included.  Among the movies to be shown will be Ghosts of Mississippi, An Ordinary Hero, Medgar Evers, and Mississippi: Is This America? 1963-64.

Evers-Everette also noted that the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation is sponsoring a Youth Congress on Tuesday, June 11 as part od a yearlong effort to support the creation of a student-drafted youth platform for positive social change for Mississippi.  According to Susan Glisson, Ph.D., director of the William Winter Institute, participants will identify with Medgar Evers’ legacy as young makers of history and preservers and protectors of Mississippi and their communities.

Coordinator Jacqueline Berry announced that “A Celebration on the Green” in the Art Garden of the Mississippi Museum of Art will be held on June 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Included will be musical entertainment, poetry readings, and remembrances of Evers’ life from individuals in the community.  Book signings and reflections by historians and authors, a literacy fair for children sponsored by Lulalee Productions, and a variety of vendors will add to the festivities.

A “Service of the Bells” will occur from 12:00 p.m. to 12:30 p.m.  “This ceremony will recall Evers’ work and sacrifice as citizens will be asked to remember our history with honesty, equity, compassion, and a commitment to seeking understanding and reconciliation across all lines of difference that separate us as members of the human race,” said Mary Woodward, past president of the Mississippi Religious Leadership Conference, sponsor of the event along with other faith-based groups.  A ringing of bells will be called for throughout the nation and worldwide.

June 12 will also be designated as International Day of Remembrance, according to Mississippi State Senators John Horhn and Willie Simmons, who presented Mrs. Evers with a concurrent resolution of the Mississippi Senate and House of Representatives adopted on April 3, 2013.

Co-chairmen of the tribute gala Juanita Sims Doty, Ed.D., chairman of the board of the Juanita Sims Doty Foundation, and Derrick Johnson, president of One Voice and the Mississippi State Conference of the NAACP, announced that the black-tie gala will unfold at 7:30 p.m. on the 12th at the Jackson Convention Complex. “This star-studded” event will honor the life and legacy of Medgar Evers but will also recognize other civil rights legends as we showcase Jackson and Mississippi’s southern hospitality…Hollywood style,” Doty said.  “Many noted civil rights icons and entertainers have been invited and will be welcomed to Jackson, walking the ‘red carpet’ and entering a transformed Jackson Convention Complex.”

According to Johnson, invited guests include civil rights activist Vernon Jordan and Mississippi blues legend B.B. King.  Other noted entertainers include gospel-recording artist Tamela Mann.  Other artists and national dignitaries will be announced at a later date.  “This tribute gala will be a fast-paced, entertaining program, and the audience will have the opportunity to experience some historical moments through video presentations and tributes from civil and human rights legends,” Johnson said.

The commemorative week will also include Charles Evers’ Medgar Evers Homecoming events and the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, the Mississippi Museum of Art, and the Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center - all of whom will feature special Medgar Evers exhibits.

Supporting organizations present included the Jackson Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Jackson Municipal Airport Authority, and the Mississippi Development Authority.  other community partners include Alcorn State University, Jackson State University and Tougaloo College.

There was a group of us named ‘G4,’ where we would dress according to the scene of the parties known as ‘Fahsion Monsters.’  Once we went to a party, dressed to match the scene or whatever and this girl who worked the door was like, ‘You’re really a fly guy,’ and it just stuck with me.  From then on I attached ‘A Fly Guy’ to everything, – A Fly Guy

So what makes a man fly? In my eyes, it’s all about confidence, leadership, ambition, Godly- ness, sex appeal and a well tailored suit.  Nothing says “fly” to me better than a good looking man in a nice suit.  A Fly Guy has a taste all his own including his obsession with sneakers.  And I’m not talking about the most marketed pair of shoes everybody seems to fight over on early Saturday mornings.  I’m talking about the sneakers your friends don’t even know about- sneakers that fit his personality and style.  But his personal love for fashion goes a bit deeper than just sneakers and simply being known for setting trends.

Whether it’s me wearing a bow tie & boat shoes to a club, or DJing in a suit, or just dressing casually in apparel not commonly worn by most others, these are reasons why I am A Fly Guy™, and a trendsetter. – A Fly Guy

There is definitely more to this man than his fly-ness.  An entrepreneur at heart, A Fly Guy has always seen himself successful in business.  As a teen, he engaged in business classes learning the proper ways of starting a business.  He actually started his first business in the ninth grade and another while attending college at Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University (FAMU).  His fashion sense kicked in and during 2004-2005 he was designing clothing for Mecca.  That serious love for sneakers I mentioned earlier came in handy.  It was in 2009 that he got his “ah-ha” moment as he begin to focus on starting another business.

In 2009 I was managing a sneaker store in Miami and my boss at the time tried to reprimand me in front of customers.  So by July 4^th, I had my own. – A Fly Guy

As he started spinning as a DJ in South Beach, he had truly begun to brand himself, so with his knowledge of building a business, his eye for fashion and ambitious personality, he went for it; opening Stock X Change in Hollywood, FL.  He knew that by opening a sneaker store that was geared only towards true sneaker-heads would be genius.

In business, I’m meticulous about things.  I’m really a control freak and I don’t believe in a buyer or stylist.  Branding is similar to relationships and how it requires consistency.  – A Fly Guy

The sneaker boutique, Stock X Change was created in a way to mimic the Stock Market.  “Just as goods are bought, sold, & traded in the Stock Market, SXC is the place where the recession-proof consumer can exchange their currency for what’s in ‘stock….’ for the masses to indulge in the latest trends and vintage selections in sneakers, apparel, and accessories.”  Neat right?  Unfortunately, in 2012 A Fly Guy had to close the doors to Stock X Change.  He realized that as he was growing as a DJ and becoming more and more noticeable, it was harder to do both – DJ and run a business.  He admits to making a lot of mistakes, but is optimistic about reopening later.  Even though it was hard to let go, he took to heart what he’d learned owning a business for future reference.

I learned not to go into paying COD (cash on delivery).  You can find yourself in trouble.  Oh and disregard the concept of sleep.  Stay up, write a plan, plan 2-3 weeks/years ahead. – A Fly Guy

In addition to giving advice to aspiring entrepreneurs, A Fly Guy takes what he’s learned to the schools as a speaker for Career Day for eight graders encouraging them to stay in school and to become an entrepreneur.

Blame it on his “carefree, in the moment, never prepare – I like to do it in the moment,” attitude.  Once the doors to his creative sneaker business were closed, A Fly Guy focused his energy more on DJing.  He is now a high profile contestant on the hour long Smirnoff creation of Master of the Mix which airs on VH1 Monday nights.

A huge opportunity indeed… people are paying more attention to him now more than ever.  He credits his inspiration to DJ Irie (official DJ for the Miami Heat) for his diverse style, but with all the fame coming his way, he keeps a humble head.

My family- my parents and my brothers wouldn’t let my head get big.  I don’t it any of this for granted.  I know there’s always room for improvement and I never can be comfortable or complacent.  And you know, I get a lot of love because I treat everyone equally. – A Fly Guy

In May, A Fly Guy will be celebrating his thirty-third birthday with about 17 years as a MC under his belt.  His legendary mixtapes (F.U.C.), R & B slow jams, now have 12 volumes with another set to release on May 8^th.  Plus, he’s planning to spin for the ‘Rock the World Extravaganza’ with Tony Rock in June.  With the show and plenty other responsibilities, A Fly Guy says he loves being in a relationship, however it’s hard to do so being a DJ.  His main focus right now is becoming the Master of the Mix and pushing the envelope as a DJ.  Check the style and remember the name, he is A Fly Guy. – LSherie

But let’s rewind a bit.  Like many freshmen and sophomores in college, Paul enjoyed everything but maintaining his grades.  One day, all of that changed.  Paul’s intellect was pricked when he purchased his first book, Why Should White Guys Have All The Fun? by Reginald F. Lewis.  This book…this book with its controversial title sparked curiosity in Paul as he wondered how this man, this black man could be so audacious as to write a book about white men having all the fun.  So, he read it and then he read it again.  He couldn’t put the book down.  There was a wealth of knowledge in that book alone that gave him new perspective on life.  It made him look back at himself and judge himself for how he was leading his life and where it was headed.

“The book was about doing the best in your craft.  Every idea that comes from that book, I conveyed into my own life.” – Paul C. Brunson

From that point on, Paul begin making drastic changes.  He took his classes more seriously and every bit of knowledge that he gained from reading Forbes 400, writing business plans and his business class swirled back into motion.

Graduating from college with honors, Paul took on a lucrative position as an investment banker.  He was definitely back on track of his desires of being a successful businessman.  And so he was.  Soon after making good money and living the good life, Paul realized that his current course of life didn’t fulfill him like he thought it would. The thought of waking every morning to go to that job ailed him so that he walked away.  Just like that, Paul left behind the money and the good life to find something better.  He yearned for something that lovingly caressed his spirit as much as it did his bank account.

“I by no means have the perfect life.  The thought of complacency is dangerous.  At that time I didn’t feel comfortable.” – Paul C. Brunson

There were several attempts of making it big in business, but they all fell through, however something else was about to charge a dramatic change in his life – he married his longtime girlfriend Jill.  Jill became even more so now than ever his sidekick…his soul mate.  Ladies, she is truly the epitome of standing by her man.  “Hands down the epitome- not many people know, but she used a lot of her own money to help me with my businesses,” Paul said proudly.  Times were definitely hard for the Brunson household, but they relied on each other for support.  “It takes team work to make the dream work.  I can’t function in one day without the two of us.  You have someone to help work through situations,” said Paul.  With perseverance, Paul made yet another career move assisting students in D.C. as a “director of ‘super centers.’”  Working with the youth in D.C. struck a nerve.  Like many communities throughout the nation, youth (especially in deprived areas) are being “written off” as failures to society.  Paul took a deeply rooted offense to this because of negative words lingering from his past basically telling him that he wouldn’t amount to very much.  Well look at him now.  Like a “moth to a flame” so to speak, Paul jumped at the opportunity to lend his guidance to the youth in D.C.  He formed a non-profit group known as “Academic Engine.”  “I worked with high school and middle school students and mentees.  I’ve seen it first hand, it’s the squeaky wheel that gets the oil,” he said.  Little did Paul know that Academic Engine would add more fuel to his desire to be successful and helping others.

Nowadays, it’s rare to find two traditional parents in a household.  Statistics have shown in many cases of low education, poverty and crime resulting from one-guardian households. Paul began to see this more and more as he worked with the youth D.C..  This made him wonder why the mothers and fathers weren’t staying together.  Paul states in his animated biography that he and his wife joking stated that they should become “matchmakers.”  Apparently that sparked some interest because soon Paul dove right into learning about being a matchmaker.  I already know what you’re thinking, because I was too… how in the world does someone just up and become a matchmaker? According to Paul, “there are governing bodies like taking courses in physiology- there’s a method.”  I like to think that Paul is a researcher.  He goes after what he wants and feeds his curiosity by engrossing himself in it well enough to know it and do it with comfort.  In a nutshell that’s what he did.  He learned and read and followed other great matchmakers, one in particular, Rachel Greenwald.  She is “the best matchmaker on the planet because I learned from her.  She was my mentor.  I participated in her theories.  She’s the smartest and very talented,” Paul said as he praised his mentor for teaching him everything he knows.   From there, Paul began matchmaking even over social media. His fan base increased significantly and everyone wanted the advice from the “real-life Hitch!”  Things were looking up, but he couldn’t imagine how “up” things would get until being approached by representatives from Oprah Winfrey’s television network (OWN Network).  He was offered the grand opportunity of sharing his craft with the world on a larger scale- much larger by accepting title as the new co-host of Lovetown USA.  This television series is based on the “attempt to mend relationships of embattled friends and lovers—young and old—and find true love for singles.” Of course he took and ran with it! The show became a success.

Being that he is a matchmaker, I asked him about today’s concept of love in his words he stated…

“Love.  We generally define love and sex as the same thing.  Love 40 to 50 years ago was not the prerequisite for a relationship.  It was more so about a social-economic status.  Now, the thought is we must have love or sex or both in the beginning.  When we talk to anthropologists, they point to birth control.  Prior to birth control the consequence of sex was a child and then marriage.  Now, people can have sex without consequence.” – Paul C. Brunson

Boosting his personal success, Paul recently released his book, It’s Complicated – But It Doesn’t Have to Be, which is selling very well! He said he wanted to write something for his son.  “I realized there wasn’t a book about relationships and how to make them work.”  Awesome right?! Well his book is soaring with the first book tour already over and another one planned in May 2013.  He’s also working on an online course for matchmakers set to begin this month called Power Circles.

Paul C. Brunson is now truly living the dream- making the good money, living the good life all with his family standing by his side.  It definitely wasn’t easy and Paul encourages you to do what he did, step out on faith.  “Everything in life has all made us who we are today.  We should embrace our uniqueness. We forget that we all have talent and skills- there’s no one else on the planet like you.  You’re going to have failures and disappointments- find out who you are.  My advice to anyone would be that you will never fail stepping out on faith.  Our belief is our reality…what we believe becomes our reality.”  Paul’s motivation and dedication to his work greatly impacts all through creating happiness in people’s lives,  interviews such as this, and social media. “If you know it…talk about it,” says Paul.

His story is an exciting whirlwind.  Today with love, family and being able to positively affect communities all over the nation and touch lives all over the world, Paul C. Brunson gracefully steps out of being a businessman to create a world of love as a business…man! – LSherie

Hard-working, young, ambitious. . Chanelle Renee’ came into the world camera ready on April 16, — destined for greatness.  As soon as she learned how to walk, she began strutting down her mother’s hallway and practicing poses in the mirror. By 9, she decided to become a model, and by 19 she was signed as a professional model.

Throughout her career, She’s modeled for various commercial/print companies, online fashion boutiques, magazines, and most recently walked the runway for Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week.  Not too long afterward, her experience moved beyond the U.S.. Chanelle took her modeling to Jamaica and the US Virgin Islands.  Photographers noted her ability to entice the camera with very little direction.

A consistent love for the arts has pushed Chanelle to challenge herself.  In 2010, Chanelle started “The Chanelle Renee’ Project”, an umbrella organization for model mentor casting director, runway coordinator/training, fashion events producer, creative direction and photo editing services.  Earlier in 2012, she set her sights on Los Angeles to perfect her various crafts, and to become a television host.
